Vintage Lonestar from Night Owl Quilting

Cynthia brought this vintage top that was made by her great grandmother.  She decided it was time to get it finished and enjoyed instead of hiding in the closet.  It was my pleasure to work on this family treasure.

We decided on some light custom quilting.  Continuous curves in the star diamonds and free flowing open feathers in the background.

I'm sure that the background fabric was flour sacks and it has a feeling that just can't be replicated.

Cynthia opted to have Marion bind her quilt using the same fabric she used on the back.  This modern ...

Serpentine from Night Owl Quilting

Cathy brought this fabulous Sea Monster quilt and asked for custom quilting.  The pattern is called Serpentine and was designed by Tula Pink and is made with fabrics from her collections.  It is available as a free download on Free Spirit fabrics website.

Angela Walters quilted Tula Pink's original quilt and Cathy like they feel of the quilting, but requested for hers to be done less densely.

I doodled a variety of ideas and sent them off to Cathy for her opinion and she selected the version you see below.  I stitched in the ditch around the points and ...

Year of Scrappy Triangles from Night Owl Quilting

Liz brought this striking quilt in for some custom quilting.  A few members of my local quilt guild got inspired to do some paper piecing and followed The Year of Scrappy Triangles blog post by Leila Gardunia.  https://www.leilagardunia.com/blog/year-of-scrappy-triangles  They did it at a faster pace, approximately one per day as time allowed.

The nature of these blocks allow for seemingly endless possibilities for unique layouts.  With the layout Liz selected, the black background to the paper pieced triangles became a prominent and interesting feature to the quilt.  Liz agreed with my suggestion of using a ...

Beary Patch from Night Owl Quilting

This darling quilt was made by Eileen for her great niece.  The pattern is called Beary Patch as was originally published in Quiltmaker magazine, but now is available on the Quilting Daily website.

Eileen requested custom quilting on this one and specifically crosshatching in the background and my 3 and E freehand design for the fur. I was happy to oblige with those ideas and added some curved lines in the cream pickets of the outer border, and stitched in the ditch along the brown pickets.  Loops in the pink inner border and a loopy design in the outer corners ...

Traditional and Contemporary from Quilt Vine

This past week or so I have been trying to catch up with some of my client’s quilts.

Life is busy in so many ways right now, so I do not take in as many quilts from clients as I used to. I like to try to stay caught up with them.

Both quilts I am featuring today were made by Cathy. Even though they are quite different, both quilts were custom freehand quilted.

This first quilt is more of a traditional quilt and so I quilted it more traditionally. The feather wreath is very traditional. This traditional quilt ...

Simple Triangles - ROYGBIV from Night Owl Quilting

This was the first quilt I made for my first grandchild.  I had seen a similar triangle quilt used to take monthly milestone pictures and I loved the idea.  I headed out to see Jennifer at Needle Craft and Studio to select a fresh new rainbow of 1/4m cuts and I also found the sweetest rainbow confetti background fabric.  My friend Kathy (Tamarack Shack) made a set a milestone number circles which make the milestone photos perfect.

I decided to add custom quilting. A pantograph certainly would have done the job, but I had the time and thought it ...

Chandelier from Night Owl Quilting

This pretty Chandelier quilt was made by Marion.  Marion used to do custom quilting for clients on her domestic sewing machine, but she no longer does because of the wear and tear on the body.  Marion had a real vision for how she wanted this quilted, and it was fun collaborating, doing things a little out of the norm and bringing her vision to life.

Marion's request was for me to quilt the body of the quilt and to leave the borders for her to do on her domestic machine.  Not the typical request, but totally doable if we ...

Quilting The Tree of Life Quilt from Podunk Pretties

Maybe I should have called this one The Redwood Forest.  Measuring 94 x 98, it's one of the largest quilts I've ever made.  And I'm pretty sure it's the largest I've ever quilted on the frame.

As with all of my quilts, I'm quilting using Superior Threads Microquilter 100wt. thread.  It's lightweight, strong and allows the quilting to shine without a heavy look of thread.  Not everyone likes this look, it's a personal preference thing.  Most quilters use this thread for stitch in the ditch or on quilts with lots of backtracking ...

Turning Leaves from Night Owl Quilting

Sydney brought this wonderful batik Turning Leaves quilt for some custom quilting.  The pattern was originally published in a 2002 Quiltmaker magazine but now is available as a download on the Quilting Daily website

I have seen this pattern done with machine applique in the past but Sydney decided to hand applique her blocks.  I used a thin Microquilter thread to stitch in the ditch around the leaves.  I was able to quilt the rest of the quilt with one blendy color of So Fine thread.

Veins in the leaves, some accent stitching in the block corners, loops in the ...

All Roads Lead to the Sea from Night Owl Quilting

This wonderful quilt was brought to me by Lillianne for some custom quilting.  The pattern is called All Roads Lead to the Sea by Country Creations.

Quilts like this always take me a while to wrap my brain around and come up with a plan for all the different areas.  I wanted the sky and water to look different from each other and also different from the fields and paths and foliage.

Once I got going I had fun outlining the buildings and adding details when more quilting was needed.  My goal is always to add a even amount of ...

She's having what for lunch?? from caledonia quilter

This is a bowl of leftover green beans (DH does not like green beans) and pickled beets (DH also does not like pickled beets, the weirdo) and feta cheese.

This is what I have picked so far today:
That's 5 sweet peppers, 2 lovely tomatoes, a bunch of cherry tomatoes, 2 strawberries (now gone - they were my lunchtime appetizer), a container-thingy of purple beans (which turn green when you cook them), and 3 zucchinis.  I already have 9 zucchinis in the fridge and I gave away 3 yesterday.  I have to go back out again to pick the Roma ...

Scrappy Irish Chain from Night Owl Quilting

Mary Margaret made this wonderful Scrappy Irish Chain quilt for her daughter.  Sometimes it is hard to get a sense of the size of a quilt from just pictures.  This one measures 110" x 110" and is one of the largest ones that has come my way for custom quilting.

Mary Maragret really wanted custom quilting to fill the large white spaces (they were about 20" across).   After sending some doodles her way, she selected the feather and curl wreath design with continuous curves in the scrappy squares.

I added a complimentary design in the white inner border, and stitched ...

Custom Quilted Quilt of Valor Finish from From My Carolina Home

When we left off the Quilt of Valor, I was about halfway finished. Continuing on, I finished the white in the flag, quilting wavy lines like a waving flag. Then I changed the thread color to red, and quilted the red stripes in the same way.

Advancing the quilt down, I outlined the lower wide stripes, and began quilting feathers going up in the red.

Moving the quilt down again, I did the red stripes along the bottom. Note that there are seams in the colors, but I ignored those and treated the stripe as one unit.

I rolled the ...

Custom Quilted Quilt of Valor from From My Carolina Home

This quilt is for a special friend, a really interesting guy. When his wife told me she was making it, I actually begged her to let me quilt it. I said I would do a nice stars and loop pantograph on it, one I use for most Quilts of Valor that I quilt. When she let me have it, I was excited to be a part of this tribute.

The pattern she used is by Needle in a Haystack called Stars and Stripes.

I loaded the quilt, and began auditioning thread colors.

But the more I looked at it, I ...

Quilting Quadrille from From My Carolina Home

For only the second time, I wanted to custom quilt a large quilt. My first one was Minuet, that I did with a large curved ruler. This time, I wanted to have some free motion feathers, some ruler work, more modern with some graphic lines. Loading the quilt on the longarm, the batting chosen was Dream Orient, now called Dream Bamboo. I like the light weight and breathability of the bamboo blend for a summer quilt. At this point, I did a lot of stand-and-stare, trying to make decisions on what to do in each section. In the end, I ...

the Sewing Watch, a Beautiful Border, and Strawberry Biscuits from caledonia quilter

Waaay back in 2013 my Singapore niece was married in Bali.  If you have insomnia some night, you can scroll back through my blog and find my stories about that.  BUT, on the way home from Bali I had a layover in Hong Kong.  While strolling around, killing time, I wandered into a little gift shop and saw a watch that was clearly made JUST FOR ME.

It was originally equipped with a red, fake leather band.  Which lasted about two weeks.  Seriously - that's no joke.  Two weeks.  On one of my adventures with Beach Girl Diane to a ...

Foxes and Bunnies in Bed 2 from Night Owl Quilting

These darling quilts were made by Reneta for her niece.  This is the second set of quilts that Reneta has made from the Sew Fresh Quilts - Bears, Foxes and Bunnies in Bed pattern. You can see her first set here,

Some light custom quilting was my choice.  A little stich in the ditch and echo quilting to make the bunnies pop with a ribbon meander in the background.  I added some wavy lines in between the rows of the print on the yellow fabric to finish is off.

The foxes got a very similar treatment with a few added lines ...

It's 31.4c in the shade from caledonia quilter

So, yeah.  This is not where I am.  It's where I WAS on the weekend - up to visit my friend Margaret in the Kawarthas.

We went to the Lindsay quilt show one day, ate too much every day, hung around the dining table gossiping catching up, and of course sewing.  I got this stitched together - it will be the center of my version of the guild Block of the Month.

Here is the whole quilt, made by my Program partner.  I donated the quilting. The guild will give this to Glanbrook Community Services to assist in their fundraising efforts ...

Sugar Bear from Night Owl Quilting

Phyl made this pretty quilt and requested custom quilting.  The pattern is called Sugar Bear and was a sew-along with Southern Charm Quilts.  All of the bright fabrics are Tula Pink prints.

The centre of each block is pieced slightly differently so those sections are quilted to match the piecing, and the remainder of the block has a consistent design for all the blocks.

I added curls in all the vertical and horizontal sashing sections.

Of the border suggestions I made, Phyl liked the Echo Curve border best, and I was thrilled as it was my favorite too.

Phyl provided ...
